Tongkat: Journey of a Stick Fighter is the 3rd installment in the Black Triangle Silat series of indie documentaries focusing on the Sumatran fighting system of Minangkabau Silek Harimau.

In this documentary, Guru Scott McQuaid embarks on a journey across the globe, tracking the many variations of tongkat (stick) combat used within the styles of Silat and its influences from diverse martial arts.

Guru Scott McQuaid explains and demonstrates this deadly jungle based combat art with aid of his students from the Black Triangle Silat tribe. This is the first film to display this fighting art up close in its brutal nature, sharing inside knowledge that has taken decades of study and research to accumulate.

Silek Harimau took over two years to produce and is a follow-up film to the highly acclaimed underground documentary Dark Gift: The Origins Of Silek Harimau.

Dark Gift: The Origins of Silek Harimau

Silek Harimau, better known today as Harimau Pencak Silat, is the rare and infamous fighting style from the Minangkabau tribe of West Sumatra. This fighting system is based on the Sumatran tiger and as a result its approach to combat is both unortho- dox and extremely effective. The art, like its inspira tion the tiger, is fast becoming extinct due to the lack of students willing to study in the strenuous and demanding training program.

Dark Gift: The Origins of Silek Harimau is an indie documentary film that took over seven years to produce. It is a unique and unprecedented attempt to trace the historic lineage and respected Harimau Silat masters across the globe. Follow the origins of this tribal warfare martial art system from Indonesia’s dense forests to the urban jungles of London and the United States.
